Moving With Pets
Pets are very observant of changes in household activities. They are creatures of habit, and become nervous about anything unusual.
Pre-move planning
Call you vet several weeks before the move for:
A physical exam for your pet.
Updates on all treatments required.
Obtain a copy of all medical records, and put them with your final moving papers as you will need them for licensing.
General pet related considerations
Provide a safe room for your cat or cats to stay out of the way of the packers and movers. Include food, litter box, toys, and bedding.
Dogs need special attention as they often assume the role of protector. Sometimes it is a good idea to ask a friend, neighbor, or kennel to care for the dog while you’re packing.
Pets such as birds, rabbits, gerbils, should be kept in a stress free environment, as they have fragile nervous systems.
Try not to bring your pets into your new home until your furnishings are in and your pet’s environment has been established. You can cut down on their anxiety by pre-planning.
Dogs
Give you dog these four things immediately after arrival:
Encouragement and praise. Verbal and petting
Water, food or a treat
Time for adjustment inside the house
Exposure to the outside on a leash. All scents will be new. Your dog must mark all new boundaries. Allow him time to do this
Situate your dog’s bed or cat’s litter box before you move your pet into the new home. Don’t worry they will find where they have to be. And where they can a must go for their basic necessities.
Cats
On arrival, be prepared to immediately set out a litter box, food, water, and a quiet place for your cat to recover from his ordeal Please don’t overlook the physical and psychological needs of your pets, especially cats. |
